Types of motor vehicle accidents that lead to severe injuries

An accident from a high-speed collision is different from a rear-end crash or one from a T-bone. However, all share one thing in common: how seriously they can impact people’s lives. To illustrate the effects of each, here are three types of collisions that can result in substantial injuries.

High-speed collisions

High-speed collisions often lead to severe and, at times, devastating injuries due to the intense force of the impact. Occupants can suffer from fractures, concussions and, in severe cases, brain or spinal cord injuries. These injuries can seriously affect a person’s entire body and quality of life in the long term.

The severity typically depends on the speed at which the vehicles were traveling, their size and whether the occupants had their seat belts on.

Rear-end accidents

Rear-end accidents may not seem as serious as high-speed collisions, but they can still cause significant harm. The sudden jolt when one vehicle hits another from behind can lead to chronic neck pain and headaches due to the violent motion of the head and neck.

High-speed rear-end collisions also pose a risk for spinal injuries, which can impact physical health and lead to weight and muscle loss due to limited movement and “muscle wasting.”

T-bone or broadside crashes

T-bone or broadside crashes occur when the front of a vehicle hits the side of another. These accidents can be particularly catastrophic if the hit vehicle lacks side airbags. The force of the impact can cause those inside the car to suffer chest, head and neck injuries as the violent collision throws them around inside the vehicle.

In severe cases, they might suffer from pelvic fractures or internal injuries. Such crashes often happen at intersections and pose a particular risk due to the vulnerability of a vehicle’s sides.
